Top five highlights of E3 2012! Updated: 06/05/12

While it is still very early in the days of E3 2012, a lot of press conferences have already been done. Out of all the new information that has flown out of E3 this is personally what I have found to be the highlights. Feel free to disagree and let me know about it!

5. Nintendo

Even before Nintendo has had their press conference, they have released new information out on their Nintendo direct channel. The information wasn’t release dates, hardware specs or anything huge, but it was interesting to see Nintendo’s console and its features slowly be revealed. So far we have a new controller to buy on top of the WiiU’s GamePad, in the form of the Wii U Pro controller. This controller mimics the tradition controllers being used by current generation consoles in an effort to make the Wii U easier to develop for and port 3rd party titles. My favorite feature reviled about the controller, was the use of a full fledged D-pad. I feel this will give Nintendo an edge on the competition when it comes to releasing older titles and indie games on the Wii U.

And FINALLY we bring you Episode 8! Sorry for the delay everyone, life has caught up with the Pixel Legends crew, and since this isn’t our full time job, we had to take a break for a bit. But we’re back now with more podcasts, and some big plans starting next month. Hopefully we’ll be going to E3!

Mario Tennis Open

After going to Wondercon on a whim, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Nintendo of America had set up a booth in the dead center of the exhibit hall. Their booth was centered on the 3DS and its upcoming games, while the WiiU was unsurprisingly a no show, Nintendo having said they’re saving it for E3.

Besides a handful of downloadable titles, there were three different yet to be released games on the floor. Spirit Camera was an odd game that focused on the use of the 3DS camera to make the settings around the player scary and weird but it came off as a little gimmicky. Kid Icarus held a spot in a majority of the 3DS’ cartridge slot with both multiplayer and single player stations. I played a bit of that, but the game comes out March 23rd so I felt like playing a game that was a bit farther off.

What Makes a Game—In Game Advertising, Why are People Mad?

It’s not as bad as people think

Product placement is nothing new to the world of the mass media. It has been in movies and TV shows for years now and is considered a very effective way of advertising a product inside of a piece of entertainment. Reese’s Pieces probably would not exist today if it wasn’t for E.T. and M&Ms being too snobby to show their product in a movie. Of course, game publishers at some point realized that, “Hey! We can make even more money if we sell ad space inside the game!” A cry was heard from the internet as people were angry that their sacred form of entertainment was being tainted by the man.

"The trailers are the best part!"

Preview—I’ve played the Vita. Don’t be jealous, though. You can too.

Select GameStop locations are currently displaying playable Vita units in their stores.  Although my time with Sony’s new handheld was brief at best, I’ve put together  a few first impressions:

While certainly more comfortable to hold than the 3Ds, the size and clarity of the OLED touch screen had me immediately impressed by the hardware.

The system is also surprisingly light, that is, without sacrificing durability (We’re talking to you, PSP 3000).

The analog sticks feel smaller than what we’re used to, but they’re sturdy, responsive, and well within reach (Hear that, Circle Pad Pro?).

Playable demos include Hot Shots Golf, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048, Little Deviants, and more. However, one game in particular stood out among the rest…
