E3 Debrief – Injustice: Gods Among Us

Even with its limited game modes, I thoroughly enjoyed Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.  Granted, I’m a  DC fanboy, but the game provided an interesting, comic book story as well as a solid MK-inspired fighting engine.  The 2008 crossover was received well enough, but Mortal Kombat purists criticized the game’s T-rating and its lack of gratuitous gore.  With NetherRealm’s exceptionally violent 2011 reboot, Mortal Kombat, any chance of a superhero successor seemed slim at best.  However, in a surprise announcement from Warner Bros. Games, Batman and Superman enter the ring once more. Only this time, our heroes take off their MK training wheels.

Make no mistake. Injustice: Gods Among Us is being developed by the fighting game gurus famous for the renowned Mortal Kombat series, but this is a new game all its own. Don’t expect fatalities, X-rays, or dismembering.  Instead, gamers can look forward to new innovations and fighting mechanics that are sure to stand out in the genre.Fighting games have placed warriors in some awesome environments.  However, aesthetics aside, it never really mattered where the bouts took place.  With Injustice, the battleground becomes just as important as the character you choose.  A shiny red button found in the Batcave fires missiles from the Batmobile, while enemies can be thrown through AND on top of the skyscrapers of the tentatively titled “Future City” (story hint?).

Fighters will react to their environment, but the environments will also react to you.  Debris falls and buildings crumble as the super-powered fighters go toe-to-toe. In a fight shown between Superman and the Flash within the Batcave, rocks fell from the ceiling every time a major blow was landed. Finally, the audience grimaces as we see a boulder crush the car… yes. That car.

NetherRealm remains tight-lipped on the story, but they’ve confirmed six fighters so far: Superman, Batman, The Flash, Wonder Woman, Solomon Grundy, and Harley Quinn.  A quick pause in the announcement trailer, however, hints at an armor-clad Lex Luthor joining the fray as well.

During the demo I witnessed at E3, I got a quick glimpse of Injustice‘s unfinished character selection screen.  While only the six confirmed fighters showed their faces, I was able to count 24 spots total; that’s 18 slots currently without a portrait. Obviously, this number is subject to change, but I’m excited to see which characters will be playable  in the game.  After all, Grundy and Quinn are hardly A-listers, so I’m hoping to see some great characters pulled out of obscurity for this – without sacrificing our mainstays, of course. Red Hood anyone?

DC has granted the studio plenty of artistic liberty regarding our heroes’ appearance, providing a grittier re-imagination of the characters we thought we knew.  And the graphics certainly do the design justice (no pun intended).  Using their “wrinkle tech,” NetherRealm has created exceptionally detailed character models and impressive lighting effects, leaving wrinkled costumes, reflecting armor, and writhing facial expressions.

It’s still early, but I’m beyond excited for this game. Who would you like to see make an appearance? E-mail us your 24-character roster for a chance to win an E3-exclusive Injustice T-shirt – email@pixelegends.com

Top five highlights of E3 2012! Updated: 06/05/12

While it is still very early in the days of E3 2012, a lot of press conferences have already been done. Out of all the new information that has flown out of E3 this is personally what I have found to be the highlights. Feel free to disagree and let me know about it!

5. Nintendo

Even before Nintendo has had their press conference, they have released new information out on their Nintendo direct channel. The information wasn’t release dates, hardware specs or anything huge, but it was interesting to see Nintendo’s console and its features slowly be revealed. So far we have a new controller to buy on top of the WiiU’s GamePad, in the form of the Wii U Pro controller. This controller mimics the tradition controllers being used by current generation consoles in an effort to make the Wii U easier to develop for and port 3rd party titles. My favorite feature reviled about the controller, was the use of a full fledged D-pad. I feel this will give Nintendo an edge on the competition when it comes to releasing older titles and indie games on the Wii U.

E3 Day 1: Scratching the Surface

South Hall Entrance to E3

South Hall Entrance to E3

Bright lights.  Loud music.  Towering posters and flashing screens as far as the eye can see.  This is E3.  For six hours we walked around the show floor, trying, yet failing, to take in all there was to see.  Giant multi-storied booths dominated the center of the of the showroom, while in the corner smaller one-man tables sat.  Free merchandise everywhere.  Oh man, the all the free stuff.  There’s a lot to take in, and there’s a lot to describe, so I’ll do my best.

Our first day on the floor was mainly spent gaining our bearings.  It’s the first year at E3 for most of us.  We needed to spend our time wisely, and decide exactly what was important to see.  Wisdom would dictate that we find out exactly what was important and interesting before jumping right into lines.  We wanted to make sure we could at least see everything before diving in to hour long lines to play 15 minutes of a game.

So naturally the at the first glimpse of Batman: Arkham City we immediately jumped into an hour long line for 15 minutes of gameplay.  I can tell you we walked away a little dazed from all the awesome, but we’ll have more on our opinions of individual games tomorrow and Thursday.

Batman: Arkham City

After coming to our senses we continued with our original plan.  Touring the Warner Bros. Interactive booth we also discovered an underwhelming Green Lantern tie-in (can you say “like God of War but mediocre?”) and a multiplayer demo for Gotham City Impostors.  The game looked interesting, but with other stylized, class based, multiplayer, first person shooters out there, it’s probably going to have a hard time making an impact.  As long as it doesn’t make the mistake of going on sale for full price then it could be an enjoyable experience.

Some of the more awesome features included a full size Marcus Fenix statue, a two story multi-booth showroom from Sony, and a massive jumbotron dominating the Capcom booth.  Nintendo’s section of the showroom was a completely enclosed room filled with glowing lights, screens displaying their 3DS, Wii, and the new Wii U consoles, and a huge representation of Link riding an eagle across the ceiling.  The next to each screen was a friendly (usually female) associate, who were always happy to assist and answer any questions.  And hand out free stuff.  Don’t forget the free stuff.  I played around with a few of the DS games, but didn’t get enough time to get a full impression just yet.  By this point we were on a mission to see everything.

A packed showroom and a 2 story Playstation Booth

A mission we technically ended up failing.  One of the only booths with missed out on was Microsoft’s.  It wasn’t a deliberate snub, but none of us really felt like we had missed much at the end of the day.  Based on the first day and opening press conferences, I hadn’t formed any negative opinion on Microsoft, but I didn’t see anything to draw me in either.  Possibly it has something to do with our subconscious not wanting to dance around in front of a Kinect, which is what Microsoft is pushing heavily this year. Nevertheless, we will visit and gain an opinion on some of the new games, and I’ll make sure those opinions make it to the web for both of our readers.  Thanks, Mom.

Tomorrow we’ll be bringing you more stories on individual games, vendors, and booths.  Hopefully we’ll be getting up some smaller individual stories throughout the day, but either way you can expect another post like this tomorrow night.
